Oil Consumption

How about I bought a used car recently, it is a high 2001, the oil indicated in the manual is 10w-30 or 10w-40 the problem I have is that it consumes me approx 500ml per week, in two weeks a small canister of motor oil (946ml) is consumed The oil that I am currently putting is castrol gtx 10w-30 My question is, should I change the oil? and put a denser one? or do i stay like that? I don't know if it's going to bring me more trouble switching to a thicker oil and further damaging the gaskets, which is what I least want ... Because the old owner should have used those types of oil and that's why I inherited this problem.

Good, you have to place the oil indicated by the manufacturer, now check the admission, where it connects with the PCV, if it is very full of oil, it is lowering compression, which heats the oil more by evaporating it faster. Check if there is smoke in the exhaust outlet, it can be wear on valve tires, or more critical, wear of the rings and / or cylinders, lowering compression inside the engine evaporating oil faster, and filtration into the combustion chamber What produces more consumption. There are many who put thicker oils, but in these new cars, the oil galleries are designed to flow in them, a lubricant of specific characteristics, greetings.

It has damaged the packing of the guides of the valves because sometimes in the morning it throws white smoke, but it is very rare that it can happen weeks without doing it, even so it consumes oil. Do not fan smoke under any other circumstance other than that.
I doubt that because of these packages have a consumption of that magnitude, I do a lot for the problem it presents. Maybe I am in error.

They can be the seals of valves (gaskets), if when being in idle or when hitting an accelerator it is observed that small white puffs come out are the seals.

Hi. There is an oil leak in the engine or excessive consumption, regardless of the lubricant used, which must be the one specified by the factory. It would be important to check the condition of the engine by performing a compression test as a first step. Salu2.

ok thanks, as I understand with the compression test it is verified if the gaskets of the rings are damaged correct?

Yes, the compression test will read the general condition of the engine, if there is wear and its size, it can also be completed with a leak test that is a quick test to perform.

Hello, as they said there and repeating, compression test and likewise would place a good brand 15w40. Although it would be nice to know what kms the vehicle has. With the wear and tear of the pieces due to use and degradation of disuse, the lights begin to expand millimetrically and by placing a larger oil this prevents it. In the life cycle a motor that starts using 10w40 / 30 ends its cycle in 20w50 having passed through 15w.40
