You must be confusing the acronyms you mention (npbf) with those of Datasheet pdf of transistors N and P which is the channel: NPN or PNP
It is correct that you bought because being power mosfet both and the same channel P you purchased admits 14 continuous amps of current between drain and source and the one you had is 12 amps continuous current therefore if a fully developed channel would pass through development 12 Amperes can now tolerate up to 14 Amps without being damaged.
