As servimat1 said, the resistance is not short, but is interrupted, so if you measure it with a tester it will mark you infinite. Have you tried changing the thermostat? Check that the resistor does not have a loose connection pin (which moves when touched with your fingers) and check that when you put the thermostat it enters strongly and that the pins where the males go, well closed so that they do not good contact That problem that produces sparks is synonymous with false contact. And the resistances are not saved, they are changed to a new one
